Your Expenditures
How the estimate is calculated
- 1
Build the qualified pool
R&D salaries, plus 55% of them as proxy overhead, 80% of arm's-length contractor costs, materials consumed, 80% of third-party research payments and R&D equipment lease costs. New R&D equipment forms a separate capital pool.
- 2
Apply the BC credit
10% of the pool. For a CCPC it is refundable on up to $6M of qualified spending and non-refundable above that.
- 3
Reduce the federal base
Provincial credits are government assistance, so the federal credit is calculated on the pool minus the BC credit.
- 4
Apply the federal credit
35% on the first $6M (current spending uses the limit before equipment), 15% above it. Cash refund: 100% of the 35% credit on current spending, 40% of it on equipment, and 40% of the 15% credit for a qualifying CCPC.

Worked example: adding a machine
A BC CCPC spends $500,000 on R&D salaries, $150,000 on contractors and $50,000 on materials. Its credits come to about $392,175, all of it refundable.
It then buys a new $400,000 pilot line used 90%+ for experimental development. That adds $166,000: $40,000 from BC and $126,000 federal, of which $50,400 is paid as cash and $75,600 reduces future tax. Read the full 2026 SR&ED changes guide.
